  3.     AWARDED. To Nelson Mandela, 70, imprisoned South African black
  4. nationalist leader: a bachelor of law degree in absentia, by the
  5. University of South Africa; in Cape Town. Mandela's law studies
  6. were interrupted 27 years ago by his arrest for involvement with
  7. the outlawed African National Congress. Mandela completed his
  8. course work by correspondence from a prison cell. He may be
  9. released after next September's general election, and will be
  10. qualified to practice as an advocate.
